Assistant Director of Community Affairs

Location: Austin, TX (Hybrid / Remote-Friendly)

Time Commitment: 5-10 hours per week

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Community Affairs (ADCA) provides strategic, relational, and operational leadership for all community-facing aspects of g3 Games. This includes overseeing membership engagement, online community health, digital communication standards, and the teams responsible for moderating and fostering inclusive community environments. 

This position oversees the Membership Manager and the Discord Team (Admins and Moderators), ensuring both areas are aligned with g3 Games’ mission, community values, and focus on psychological safety. The ADCA is the bridge between the Executive Director, Operations, Events, Programs, and the broader membership, helping every participant feel welcomed, supported, and connected.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Supervision

  • Provide direct support, coaching, and oversight to the Membership Manager and Discord Admin/Moderator Team. 

  • Hold regular check-ins to monitor engagement levels, challenges, and community needs. 

  • Review and approve key membership initiatives, onboarding processes, and digital community guidelines or updates. 

  • Ensure all community-facing volunteers feel prepared, supported, and aligned with g3 Games’ mission.

Community Strategy & Engagement

  • Lead the development of g3 Games’ community engagement strategy across both digital and in-person spaces. 

  • Support growth initiatives focused on membership recruitment, retention, belonging, and satisfaction. 

  • Help design pathways for members to become more involved (volunteering, leadership, program participation, etc.). 

  • Identify opportunities to strengthen member relationships, cross-community communication, and peer-to-peer connection.

Online Community Leadership

  • Oversee the health and culture of the g3 Games Discord server and any other official digital platforms. 

  • Support Admins and Moderators in managing community guidelines, safety, conflict resolution, and escalations. 

  • Ensure consistent documentation, communication standards, and moderation policies are followed.

  • Review community concerns, disputes, or safety issues escalated from the moderation team. 

  • Collaborate with Communications Leads to align messaging and maintain respectful, human-centered interactions.

Community Standards, Safety, & Inclusion

  • Help maintain and evolve g3 Games’ community guidelines, code of conduct, and safety standards. 

  • Promote practices that foster inclusion, accessibility, and support for diverse members. 

  • Work with the Executive Director on sensitive issues such as boundary-setting, conflict mediation, and safety reviews. 

  • Ensure onboarding and training reinforce g3 Game’s identity as a human-first, play-centered, socially responsible organization.

Membership Development & Support

  • Oversee the Membership Manager’s work in tracking member engagement, demographics (non-sensitive), and participation trends. 

  • Review and approve membership newsletters, welcome materials, and outreach messages. 

  • Support the development of new member pathways, social opportunities, and connection-focused initiatives. 

  • Encourage a sense of continuity, history, and shared story across the community.

Cross-Team Collaboration

  • Coordinate with the Assistant Director of Operations to ensure communication and community updates reach members consistently. 

  • Work with the Events team to align messaging and support member participation in game nights and gatherings. 

  • Collaborate with Program Managers (via the Assistant Director of Programs) to integrate program engagement into broader community strategy. 

  • Ensure community-related insights are conveyed to leadership to shape organizational decisions.

Data, Reporting, & Continuous Improvement

  • Support the Membership Manager in collecting member feedback and generating engagement insights. 

  • Analyze community trends to identify opportunities, risks, or areas needing additional support. 

  • Prepare monthly updates for the Executive Director and contribute to Board reports as needed. 

  • Recommend improvements to community processes, onboarding, guidelines, or digital tools.


Qualifications

Required

  • Passion for community-building, human connection, and inclusive environments. 

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. 

  • Experience moderating or managing digital communities or online groups. 

  • Leadership or supervisory experience (volunteer or professional). 

  • Ability to navigate sensitive interpersonal dynamics with empathy and discretion. 

  • Comfort using digital platforms (Discord, Google Workspace, etc.). 

  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple teams and manage several priorities simultaneously.

Preferred

  • Experience in community management, volunteer management, conflict resolution, or facilitation. 

  • Familiarity with tabletop games and play-based community-building. 

  • Experience developing community guidelines or contributing to online culture policy. 

  • Background in nonprofit work, social groups, or DEI-related initiatives.


Compensation

This is currently an unpaid volunteer leadership position. As g3 Games grows its funding and staffing capacity, this role may be eligible for future compensation, subject to organizational resources and Board approval.
